The well-respected philosopher who passed away yesterday at the age of 67 believed college athletics are part of a "larger academic mission and should be kept in proper perspective," and he "spoke with eloquence and passion about college athletics' role in higher education." He is credited with "making unprecedented progress in pushing for academic reform." He's being called the "most reform-minded president in NCAA history," who "wanted the NCAA to stand for something more than athletics." Fitting attributes for a leader who had the right intentions for doing the correct thing, a leader who will be missed by many in sports business.
