FOOTBALL FEVER: KHOU-CBS earned a 17.4 local rating in Houston for Sunday's Texans-Titans game. KPRC-NBC drew an 18.2 local rating in the market for Giants-Cowboys "Sunday Night Football" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 9/25). In Dallas, Barry Horn noted a network exec offered a theory for the "boffo ratings" the NFL and college football have generated this season, saying that the "economy has forced more people to stay home and watch TV and the NFL is a perfect alternative to a day or a night out" (DALLASNEWS.com, 9/23).
CANADA REPORT: TSN drew 3.311 million total viewers for its four CFL telecasts last weekend, including 1.127 million for Sunday's Eskimos-Roughriders game that was played "opposite the usual Sunday blanket NFL coverage on other networks." TSN2 earned "over one million viewers" for Monday night's Canadiens-Penguins preseason game, which aired opposite TSN's broadcast of Colts-Dolphins "MNF" (GLOBESPORTS.com, 9/23). TSN said that the 1.127 million viewers for Eskimos-Roughriders was an "all-time record for a regular-season game" on the network. CFL games posted four of the top seven most-viewed sports telecasts last weekend in Canada (THESTAR.com, 9/23).
NOTES: ESPN earned a 16 local rating in St. Louis for last Sunday's Cubs-Cardinals game, "tying for the second-best rated" Cardinals game this year. However, that trailed a 17.4 local rating on KTVI-Fox for Sunday's Rams-Redskins game (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 9/25)....Spike drew 4.1 million viewers for the September 16 debut episode of "The Ultimate Fighter: The Heavyweights," and "another million" viewers watched the replay of the show. UFC President Dana White Tuesday said that the debut episode "doubled the popular reality fighting series' usual numbers" (LATIMES.com, 9/23).
