In the latest twist in the Coyotes' ongoing bankruptcy saga, the NHL submits a bid to buy the financially-troubled franchise just as a group led by Jerry Reinsdorf withdraws its $148M offer. The Reinsdorf group, viewed by many as the favorite in the Coyotes’ September 10 auction, blames an “organized publicity effort” for hampering negotiations for a new Jobing.com Arena lease. The move is seen by some as little more than a desperate attempt by the league to prevent Jim Balsillie from being awarded the franchise and moving it to Hamilton. The NHL says if its bid is approved, it will conduct a sale process with a third party, meaning Reinsdorf still may emerge as the eventual owner.
