Quote of the Day
"They were absolutely numb. They were in a state of shock, and there was a lot of anger almost immediately."
-- ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, on fans' reactions to the Eagles signing Michael Vick at Thursday night's preseason game against the Patriots ("Mike & Mike," ESPN2, 8/14).
Eagles' Signing Of Vick
Puts Spotlight On Team
The long-running debate over Michael Vick's new NFL home has come to an end with the Eagles signing the controversial QB to a two-year deal. Most observers express surprise that the typically controversy-free Eagles are taking a chance on Vick, as the team generally has "avoided players with character issues." But coach Andy Reid firmly defends the move, saying people "deserve a second chance," and the N.Y. TIMES' Judy Battista notes the Eagles "provide Vick with a stable organization to insulate him during what is sure to be a tumultuous return." ESPN reporter and longtime Philly resident Sal Paolantonio says there is "a lot of anger" among fans, with a large majority of sports talk radio callers against the move. Paolantonio: "This is literally the most shocking news story to be just dumped in the lap of this city since I've been a reporter here."
