LPGA Committee Posts Job Prospectus For New Commissioner

The LPGA committee that is looking for the organization's next commissioner expects to give the BOD a list of finalists by early October, according to a memo sent to LPGA players on Tuesday. The memo, from search committee chairwoman Leslie Greis, states, "We do not want to rush a decision, but a shorter search is better for the organization given the need for the organization to have permanent leadership through these challenging economic times." The job prospectus specifically addresses some of the concerns expressed by tournament directors, sponsors and players during Carolyn Bivens' four-year tenure, including the inability to foster a positive work environment and build lasting relationships with the tour's constituents. Under the heading "Critical Competencies for Success," the prospectus states, "In an environment where relationships with players, sponsors, tournament owners and staff have been strained and tested, the Commissioner will strengthen those relationships and create a culture of credibility and trust." Turnover among upper-management and younger staffers was a hallmark of the last four years. The LPGA went through two CFOs, two CMOs and one COO under Bivens. Other traits the committee is looking for include an "understanding of golf and the relationships within the golf industry," as well as "demonstrating a willingness to make tough decisions, but always treating people fairly and with dignity," and "managing and nurturing excellent relationships with the global media." The LPGA is under the management of acting Commissioner Marty Evans, one of the independent board members responsible for the tour's oversight.

SEARCHING NEAR AND FAR: The search is being conducted by an LPGA committee, led by Greis, that includes board member Bill Morton and player directors Juli Inkster and Helen Alfredsson. DC-based executive search firm Spencer Stuart is assisting in the process. Jed Hughes, head of the sports practice, and Leslie Hortum, who works in the non-profit association practice, are managing the search at Spencer Stuart. The search committee and Spencer Stuart, according to Greis' letter, have created an outreach program to gain input from players and members of the board and advisory council about potential candidates. The tour also created a link at LPGA.com from which anyone can submit a resume or suggest a candidate. The tour is also expected to post the prospectus on the site this week.
