Speed Reads: Devin Hester Stars In New Under Armour Cleat Ad
Published July 20, 2009
Bears WR Devin Hester and NFL Network analyst Deion Sanders are featured in Under Armour's new nationwide TV spot "Mission." The commercial was filmed at Wrigley Field and Soldier Field and debuted during ESPN's telecast of the ESPY Awards last night. The 60-second ad, which promotes the company's new "UA Fierce" cleats, incorporates retail partner The Sports Authority and includes entries from Hester's Twitter account (Under Armour). In Ft. Lauderdale, Sarah Talalay noted the commercial is "filmed from Hester's point of view." It is a "day in his life -- his waking up, visiting with Deion Sanders, signing autographs at Sports Authority, throwing out the first pitch at Wrigley Field and working out at Soldier Field." At the beginning of the ad, it "isn't entirely clear who the view is following, but the ad offers clues along the way." Hester: "It's pretty strange, it's kind of like a mystery, trying to figure out 'who is this person? Oh OK, they want to keep it like a little secret and then at the end wow, OK.' I think this is the first commercial where they featured just one guy. I'm blessed to be the guy to do it." Talalay noted the commercial is also the "first campaign in which Hester has held the starring role" (SUN-SENTINEL, 7/19).
