Quote of the Day

Everyone around me was giving me a hard time, saying: 'What the heck? He's wearing White Sox stuff.' That's how we roll in Chicago. We've got the president behind us."

-- White Sox P Mark Buehrle, on President Obama wearing a White Sox jacket while throwing out the first pitch at last night's All-Star Game (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 7/15).

    Obama's Presence At All-
    Star Game Well Received

MLB seemed to strike the right tone last night for the 80th All-Star Game, and the league leaves St. Louis feeling good about its presentation of its Mid-Summer Classic. While nothing could compare to the scale of last year’s event in N.Y. at Yankee Stadium, Tuesday night’s production clearly reflected MLB’s theme of giving back. The night was given a big-event feel highlighted by President Obama’s easy and accessible appearance, as he worked the diamond and Fox’ broadcast booth comfortably. Now, MLB begins the second half of what Bud Selig said “could be our greatest season” considering the economic condition of the country. Selig: “The sport has never been this popular. Yet 10 or 15 years ago, everybody was feeling sorry for baseball. 'Ah, it's boring, it's dull, it's past its time.' It's been declared moribund for six decades by many people. Well, these numbers keep adding up.”
