Nationals' Signing Period
Now that the Nationals have officially made Stephen Strasburg the No. 1 pick in the MLB Draft, the real fun begins. Nationals acting GM Mike Rizzo says the Lerners have provided "all the resources to go get the best player," but with Scott Boras reportedly seeking $50M and hinting Strasburg could spend a year in Japan if he does not get what he wants, the upcoming talks have all the makings of a precedent-setting battle. Still, the Nats' decision to select Strasburg in spite of the obvious hurdles indicates the team may finally be willing to do whatever it takes to compete, and the club would be wise to build on what could be the "biggest day" in franchise history and work out a deal. Elsewhere, the Pirates, a year removed from their own battle with Boras, emphasize signability in their draft selections, though most teams around the league continue to focus primarily on talent. Meanwhile, can we get a little excitement in MLB Net’s coverage of the Draft next year?
