Chips & Putts: UPS Signs Four-Year Sponsorship Of British Open
Published April 30, 2009
UPS yesterday announced efforts to expand its sponsorship of int'l golf, including signing a four-year deal as an official supplier of the British Open. The agreement adds to UPS' pre-existing four-year deal to sponsor six PGA European Tour events annually as the tour's official logistics and express sponsor. The company also announced deals with golfers Lee Westwood and Pablo Larrazábal to become UPS global brand ambassadors (UPS).
LOUD & PROUD: Golfer John Daly is playing in the PGA European Tour Spanish Open this week, and he is "sporting some colorful garb" courtesy of a new sponsorship with LoudMouth Golf. Daly, who has lost 50 pounds in the last nine weeks, said, "I'm not skinny yet, but when I get real skinny, I'll be able to wear some real outrageous stuff" (GOLFWEEK, 5/2 issue). PA SPORT's Matt Garrod noted Daly during yesterday's pro-am wore an "orange shirt and a pair of outrageous trousers even Ian Poulter might think twice about wearing." Daly: "It gets brighter than these, but I like that stuff -- and nobody else has thrown things my way" (SPORTINGLIFE.com, 4/29).
PICTURE THIS: MEDIAPOST's Aaron Baar reported with Kodak in its first year sponsoring the PGA Tour, the company is "looking to use a fantasy golf league to deepen its partnership and bring consumers in closer to the action." The effort encourages fans to "create a fantasy foursome" for each of the remaining 17 holes of the Kodak Challenge, and the participant whose foursome scores the lowest each week can win various Kodak prizes. Pre-registration for the game begins this week, and the first eligible hole is at the Crowne Plaza Invitational that begins on May 28 (MEDIAPOST.com, 4/27).
