  • Even The Masters Not Immune From Economy

    The Masters has teed off at Augusta National with the typical fanfare, but this year even one of golf’s preeminent tournaments is expected to feel the sting of the economy. Ticket sales on the secondary market are down 30-40% from last year, while hotel rooms and luxury rentals remain available around the course as deep-pocketed visitors and corporations cut back on discretionary spending. Still, Augusta National Chair Billy Payne claims the tournament’s conservative approach shields it from the brunt of the downturn, and he expects The Masters to generate the same kind of excitement it has in the past. Meanwhile, Payne said Augusta National officials will look at “modifications of our tournament admissions policy, or further refinements of our Internet presentation," to further engage young golf fans.
