LEARNING EACH OTHER'S GAME: In Milwaukee, Bob Wolfley noted new Brewers radio announcer Cory Provus this year "becomes the seventh partner" announcer Bob Uecker has "had during his Hall of Fame broadcasting career." Provus said that part of his role is to "serve as a link between the baseball Uecker experienced, the stories he has accumulated, the players and teams he has seen, to a younger generation of baseball fans." Provus: "My generation is all about the Internet. All about fantasy baseball. All about what's on 'SportsCenter' every night. That's all good and well. So I think it is important to pass along the batting average, the home runs, all the numbers. Stats are great. but if your broadcast is based solely on stats, you are missing out on something" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 4/4). Meanwhile, Wolfley reports former MLBer Jerry Augustine has joined FS Wisconsin as a "pre- and post-game analyst for Brewers telecasts this season" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 4/7).
BIG APPLE TV: In N.Y., Bob Raissman notes during YES Network's coverage of two Yankees exhibition games at the new Yankee Stadium Friday and Saturday, "all pictures provided by the high home-plate camera were obstructed by the net ... behind home plate, which shields fans from batted baseballs." Raissman: "The fact YES gave viewers an obstructed view in its first two telecasts was not only embarrassing, it suggested there may not have been a whole lot of consultation -- concerning camera positioning -- between Yankees brass and the brilliant TV minds running YES during construction of the ballpark" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 4/7). Meanwhile, Raissman reported SportsNet N.Y. is "on the verge of doing a postgame radio show on SNY.TV.com following its TV postgame on SNY." The show will likely "frequently feature some combination of -- or solo appearances by" -- Mets announcers Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling and Gary Cohen (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 4/5).
NOTES: Phillies manager Charlie Manuel yesterday began a weekly call-in segment on WPHT-AM, the Phillies' flagship station. The segment will take place at 8:00am ET on Mondays. Meanwhile, WPHT-AM and WIP-AM will "simulcast Sunday games from May until Labor Day" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 4/5)....FS North will carry 95 of its 115 Twins telecasts in HD this season, an increase of 30 games from '08 (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 4/6).
