    Calipari Becomes Top-
    Paid Basketball Coach

March may be over, but the madness continues, as Kentucky makes John Calipari the nation’s highest paid college basketball coach, signing him to an eight-year, $31.65M deal. Not surprisingly, critics claim the lavish spending by a public university in the current economic climate is inappropriate. But UK AD Mitch Barnhart defends the deal, saying schools "must pay a premium price” to compete. Despite a group of the Memphis business elite attempting to convince Calipari to stay, Kentucky is successful in wooing the coach to Lexington and will pay UM $200,000 to buy out his contract. Coach Cal’s departure leaves a large void in Memphis, where he has endeared the team to the city, often times stealing the spotlight from the local NBA franchise.
