ESPN has long been at the forefront of embracing emerging technology, and news that it will be part of Disney Media’s deal with YouTube continues that trend. The net will provide short-form content to different ad-supported channels on the Web site beginning in the middle of April. An ESPN-branded video player will be integrated into the net’s YouTube channels, which in theory will extend ESPN’s reach for highlights. One point worth watching is ABC/ESPN’s attempt to monetize around the content as a way to “allay advertiser concerns.” However, the net does suffer a loss, as Fox Soccer Channel outbids the World Wide Leader for UEFA Champions League matches beginning next season. The move is surprising due to the relatively small number of households FSC is currently in compared to ESPN. Meanwhile, Bill Simmons conducts an engaging discussion with ESPN’s John Walsh on his podcast about some of the restrictions he feels from the folks in Bristol. Looking ahead, the net on Monday will debut new "SportsCenter" animation and graphics.
