  • Turnstile Tracker: Average Attendance For WBC Up 8.7% From '06

The '09 World Baseball Classic drew a total of 801,458 fans for its 39 games, averaging 20,550 per game, which was up 8.7% from an average of 18,900 fans in '06. Dodger Stadium, which played host to the semifinals and final game, averaged 47,285 fans for the three games, which was up 12.0% from 42,201 fans per game when the final games were held at Petco Park three years ago. The U.S. team was not among the final four teams for that event. Japan and Korea played five times in this year's tournament, including the championship game. Their first match at the Tokyo Dome on March 7 outdrew both semifinal game at Dodger Stadium. This year's event also saw only four games fewer than 10,000 fans, as the first-round games were moved outside the U.S. for the first time. The '06 event had 10 games under that mark, with first-round games held in Arizona and Florida. The chart below lists average attendance, by venue, for the '09 WBC, with comparisons to each venue used in '06. Also included is a chart with game-by-game attendance for this year's event (THE DAILY).
