USA Boxing May Move From Colorado Springs Without City Money
Published March 19, 2009
USA Boxing, "seeking money for programming and grass-roots initiatives," might move its HQs from Colorado Springs if the city does not provide $3M "in a line of credit or unsecured loan," according to Brian Gomez of the Colorado Springs GAZETTE. USA Boxing leaders, who claim that they are "in relocation talks with four potential markets," this week are scheduled to meet with Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera "in hopes of striking a deal that would cement the NGB's future here and give the federation 25 years to reimburse the city." USA Boxing this summer is scheduled to move to a former Colorado Springs Utilities building, joining NGBs for badminton, judo, taekwondo and weightlifting. Twenty of the USOC's 39 NGBs are headquartered in Colorado Springs. USA Water Polo last year relocated to Huntington Beach, California, and USA Basketball plans to move to Glendale, Arizona. USA Boxing CEO Jim Millman said, "There are some benefits to being neighbors to a number of other sports. There's a benefit in being close to the USOC. But in a hard-dollar economy, those factors need to be weighed against some of the financial needs" (Colorado Springs GAZETTE, 3/18).
