  • Vancouver MLS Team To Play In BC Place

    One day before Seattle Sounders FC play their first game in MLS, it appears they may already have a rival, at least geographically-speaking. The league today is announcing Vancouver will begin play in ’11 as its 17th member franchise. Led by USL Whitecaps Owner Greg Kerfoot and Suns G Steve Nash, the ownership group successfully pitches a plan that includes a C$365M renovation to BC Place. With one of the two expansion openings now filled, the battle between the three remaining finalist cities -- Ottawa, Portland and St. Louis -- figures to become even more intense. Meanwhile, MLS Commissioner Don Garber says on the eve of the ’09 season the league may extend and expand its designated player rule. On the stadium front, DC United no longer will seek bonds for a Maryland pitch, while MLSE may look to expand BMO Field.
