Last Man Standing
The NFLPA last night unanimously elects DC-based attorney DeMaurice Smith to replace late Exec Dir Gene Upshaw, bringing to a close a long, often-contentious campaign for one of the most powerful positions in sports. The selection of Smith, who has no background in sports or labor law, may come as a surprise to some, as he outlasted candidates with far more NFL experience and deeper relationships in the industry. But Smith wins over player reps with his "no-nonsense style of leadership" and a comprehensive plan for the upcoming CBA negotiations, which includes a "detailed account of how to win" against ownership. His presentation Saturday reportedly "wowed" player reps and "blew them away." Moving forward, Smith recognizes there is no time to waste, as a potential uncapped season in '10 looms on the horizon as long as the league's labor situation remains unresolved.
