Scherr Leaving USOC
After Nine YearsThe USOC goes into the weekend dealing with the surprising news that CEO Jim Scherr is resigning from the organization effective at the end of the month. Board member Stephanie Streeter will replace Scherr on an interim basis after an emergency meeting is called Thursday. The departure reportedly was “mutually decided upon” by Scherr and USOC Chair Larry Probst following a BOD meeting earlier in the week. Scherr’s nine-year tenure with the USOC will be remembered for his ability to restore stability to an organization that had seen its exec ranks become a revolving door. The timing of the move is most curious, and could lead to some real headaches for the USOC in the near future. There are some major sponsors up for renewal whose continued support is crucial amid the current economic climate. Scherr’s departure also could be a mark against Chicago’s chance to land the 2016 Games.
