S.F. Mayor, 49ers President Jed York Meet To Discuss Stadium Issues
Published March 4, 2009
S.F. Mayor Gavin Newsom said he had a "very pleasant" meeting yesterday in City Hall with 49ers President Jed York, and the meeting ended "without the frustration that was common between Newsom" and York's father, 49ers co-Owner John York, according to John Cote of the S.F. CHRONICLE. That could "bode well for smoothing the relationship between the team and the city, which wants to keep" the club. 49ers VP/Communications Lisa Lang said that yesterday's meeting "covered the city's lease obligations at the team's current home at Candlestick Park, short- and long-term options for remodeling that stadium and progress being made on the Hunters Point project." However, Lang said, "None of this changes the fact that the City of Santa Clara is our first choice" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 3/4). In S.F., Brent Begin notes Jed York is "scheduled to meet again with Newsom" at 4:00pm PT today. The team said that their "current focus is to build in Santa Clara, although they have also said in the past that San Francisco remains as a possible backup plan." 49ers officials last week also said that they are "open to considering a different site, the Santa Clara County fairgrounds, a suggestion made by county Supervisor George Shirakawa Jr" (S.F. EXAMINER, 3/4).
