  • Split Decision

MLS’ hopes of aligning with one of the premier international soccer brands have taken a hit this week, as Brightstar Communications’ Marcelo Claure and FC Barcelona abandon plans for an expansion team in Miami. FC Barcelona CEO Joan Oliver notes gaining a presence in the U.S. “continues to be a priority” for the club, but it ultimately decides to scrap its much ballyhooed plans in part after MLS refuses to lower the $40M expansion fee. Claure said, “Too many things had to happen, and the economic situation just isn't right.” Despite the loss of a potential partner with the global reach of FC Barcelona, the move could actually benefit MLS. The league already has seen one franchise based in the Miami market fold this decade as it failed to find a foothold locally, and the MIAMI HERALD’s Linda Robertson writes the league was getting “cold feet” on Barca’s proposal and “sensed no buzz” around the bid. Attention now turns to the four remaining candidates -- Ottawa, Portland, St. Louis and Vancouver.
