JoongAng Broadcasing To Sponsor LPGA March Event In Phoenix
Published February 16, 2009
LPGA Commissioner Carolyn Bivens announced that Korea-based JoongAng Broadcasting Corp. (JBC) will sponsor the LPGA's March 26-29 event at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix "at least for this year ... as part of a new commitment making JBC the tour's official Korean media rights partner," according to John Davis of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. The event is currently listed as the Phoenix LPGA Int'l, but "will be renamed later." Meanwhile, the LPGA also "hopes to establish a new tournament in Los Angeles, which JBC would sponsor for five years, starting in 2010" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 2/14). In California, Larry Morgan reported the Hacienda and Industry Hills golf clubs both "are interested in hosting" an LPGA event in Southern California. The LPGA "hasn't had an event in Southern California since Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes hosted the Office Depot Championship" in '04. JBC "will underwrite the tournament," and Bivens is "expected to choose a course soon" (PASADENA STAR NEWS, 2/14).
