Nationals Park Set To Close Over Budget With Final Price Of $693M
Published January 8, 2009
The final total price for Nationals Park is $693M, up from the $631M budget agreed upon when the DC Council approved the ballpark lease in '06, according to Tim Lemke of the WASHINGTON TIMES. The DC Sports & Entertainment Commission is "in the process of executing a 'close-out' agreement" with Clark-Hunt-Smoot, the ballpark's construction crew, and the "completion of that agreement means the work is done." When Nationals Park opened last March, there were "more than 30,000 items on a punchlist that needed to be taken care of." That list "now has just nine things left on it." Lemke noted for the most part, the increase in ballpark cost "came from the cost of land and environmental cleanup at the site," as "buying all the land through eminent domain cost about $57[M] more than expected." The chart below lists the aspects of construction that "came in over budget" (WASHINGTONTIMES.com, 1/7).
