Moorad Reaches Deal
To Acquire PadresSome surprising news to kick off the year out of MLB’s NL West, where D’Backs General Partner & CEO Jeff Moorad reaches an “agreement in principal” to acquire the Padres from John Moores and his wife. For Moorad, who resigned from the D'Backs on Friday, the move showcases his desire to move back to southern California, and he now becomes the leader of a “small but significant” ownership group. The deal is expected to close in the next four months, and while financial terms were not widely reported, an MLB source said that the deal will top $400M. Moores paid about $80M for the team in December '94. Moorad has generally received strong marks for turning around the D’Backs since joining the club in ’04. For the Padres, the move raises questions about the future of well-respected CEO Sandy Alderson.
