AFL Struggling To Survive Amid Recession

The economy continues to hit sports full force as the AFL teeters on the edge of collapse. Amid much speculation, AFL officials decide not to cancel the '09 season "at this time." The league appears divided on the best course of action, though influential crossover owners like Jerry Jones and Pat Bowlen are spearheading a restructuring. With the AFL’s troubles and the NFL this week announcing it is cutting 150 jobs, Michael Wilbon says the magnitude of the recession is fully apparent with it reaching pro football. David Stern reveals the crisis has him worried about attendance, suites, sponsors and more within the NBA. And despite CC Sabathia's record deal, the Marlins’ David Samson says fans are wrong to think the economy is not playing a factor in the slow free-agent market this offseason.
