SportsMedia Challenge's Buzz Manager analyzed online discussion surrounding the NHL's suspension of Avery after inappropriate comments he made to the media. Whether bloggers responded positively, negatively, or neutrally about if Avery should have been suspended, they were mostly unified by their negative remarks towards Avery’s past and present antics. - The Buzz ranked 10 out of 10, a topic of a very high level of interest among sports bloggers.
- Bloggers in the positive category (33%) have had enough of Avery’s escapades and felt like it was “about time” that he received punishment. Bloggers were also concerned that remarks such as this would damage the image of the NHL, resulting in a mockery of the situation. Bloggers were happy with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman's response, feeling he sent a statement that these “childish” actions aren’t acceptable.
- Bloggers in the negative category (50%) saw the punishment as unnecessary and harsh. Although they thought Avery should not have made the comments, they didn’t see it as a punishable offense. Many used the NFL Giants WR Plaxico Burress incident to argue that Avery’s missteps did not involve anything illegal and didn’t place anyone in danger; therefore, the NHL overstepped its bounds by suspending Avery.
- Bloggers in the neutral category (17%) were not surprised by the suspension, mentioning his past actions, but not stating whether or not they agreed with the suspension.
