Giants Stadium's First Lax Event To Be Collegiate Tripleheader
Published November 10, 2008
Giants Stadium will host a tripleheader men's college lacrosse event, the first lacrosse games ever played at the venue, on April 4 called the Big City Classic, according to Pete Thamel of the N.Y. TIMES. Virginia will play North Carolina in the first game, followed by Princeton-Syracuse and Hofstra-Delaware. All of the teams "have committed to the event for two seasons." Virginia coach Dom Starsia: "If we can capture the attention of the people in the metropolitan area, we have a chance to do something. There are pockets of lacrosse around New York, but there's also people on the edges who've only heard about the game” (N.Y. TIMES, 11/9). Inside Lacrosse Publisher Bob Carpenter, whose publication is planning the event, said, "One of the glaring absences our sport's had to date, is that the top level of Division I men's lacrosse has never been played on the doorstep of New York City. ... With the combination of these programs, we feel we're bringing to the New York metropolitan area one of the strongest lineups ever assembled." The event is the latest that will be run by Inside Lacrosse, joining the February 28 Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic and the April 11 Day of Rivals games, which will both be played at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore (INSIDELACROSSE.com, 11/10).
