Report States Tribune Could Keep Up To 50% Of Cubs
When Sam Zell purchased Tribune Co. in April '07, he could not have anticipated that selling off one of the most marketable assets in sports, the Cubs and Wrigley Field, would cause such a headache. As the current economic crisis continues to take its toll on the sporting world, the WALL STREET JOURNAL reports sales talks between Tribune and the remaining bidders for the Cubs have stalled. In a continued effort to get a deal done, Tribune may retain as much as 50% of the team -- a far cry from recent plans to keep just a 5% stake. One prospective owner who may be wasting his time is fan-favorite Mark Cuban -- a source says there is "no way" Bud Selig and team owners would allow Cuban to buy the club.
