Golf Channel To Add Live Weekend Coverage Of 12 PGA Tour Events
Published October 14, 2008
Golf Channel next year will add live weekend coverage of 12 PGA Tour events that air on CBS. The telecasts, which will lead into CBS' weekend coverage, will feature live tournament action, as well as features, news, analysis and interviews from the world of golf. CBS broadcasts will begin following Golf Channel coverage. Golf Channel also will have the option to replay weekend coverage and produce a tournament highlight show to be televised in primetime on Mondays (Golf Channel). SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Show & Ourand report Golf Channel parent company Comcast as part of the deal will "launch CBS College Sports in an extra 2 million homes, bringing the cable channel's total to 25 million." Any additional compensation between Golf Channel and the PGA Tour "could not be determined," but a tour exec said that Golf Channel was "paying incremental production fees to CBS." Show & Ourand report Golf Channel will have a 2 1/2-hour window beginning at 12:30pm ET. The 12 tournaments have not been decided, but will "likely include the six CBS events in which Tiger Woods has played in the past and the first of the four FedEx Cup playoffs." Golf Channel also "had requested to staff the telecasts with CBS talent Jim Nantz and Nick Faldo," but it is "unclear whether either announcer will be available for Golf Channel's coverage" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 10/13 issue).
