Tiger Developing Third Golf Course On Pacific Coast Of Mexico
Published October 8, 2008
Golfer Tiger Woods will design a new "oceanfront golf course" on the Pacific coastline of Baja California in Mexico in a new development called Punta Brava, Woods' third golf-course design, according to Christina Lewis of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. The development, slated to open in 2011, will "sit on the tip of a peninsula south of Ensenada, about 70 miles south of San Diego" and will include "roughly 125 homes with prices beginning from $3[M] for a one-acre vacant lot and $3.5[M] for a condo." Austin-based The Flagship Group, co-Founded by former Vikings and Spurs Owner Red McCombs, will develop the property. Sales at the development began yesterday. Woods, who also is designing courses in Dubai and North Carolina, said, "My plan is only to do a select few. I don't have a lot of time to do a whole bunch of golf courses. I devote so much of my time to these" (WSJ.com, 10/7). Golf course developer Brady Oman said that while the project's budget is "not yet complete, similar developments have cost more than $100[M] to build" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 10/7). Woods, at a news conference announcing the development, said, "Every single hole, whether you're watching from the tee, fairway or green, you can see the ocean. This is a fun course" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 10/8). Woods said one of the reasons Jack Nicklaus “has been so successful” as a golf course designer because “he was a cerebral player and he brought that into his design business, and I feel I’m trying to do that as well” (“Golf Central,” Golf Channel, 10/6).
