Steve Tisch Booed At Halftime Over PSL Plan For New Stadium

Giants Fans Boo Tisch
During Halftime Appearance
Giants Chair & Exec VP Steve Tisch at halftime of last night's Redskins-Giants game was "just about booed off the field," and the fans' anger was "clearly a protest for the expensive and controversial" PSLs the Giants are charging for the new Giants-Jets Stadium in the Meadowlands, according to Gary Myers of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Tisch was presiding over the introduction of "Stand Up For Cancer," a new fund-raising initiative, and he was "standing in front of nearly 80,000 fans, many of whom will have to pay PSLs ranging from [$1,000-20,000] per seat for the right to buy their tickets at the new stadium." Myers writes Tisch "clearly miscalculated his audience by speaking in front of what quickly became a hostile and bitter crowd when he was introduced." Myers: "He should have known better. ... It was an embarrassing moment for the Giants." Tisch declined to comment on the incident. Giants co-Owner John Mara "picked a friendlier crowd when he spoke at the team's recent preseason luncheon," where "nobody booed" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 9/5). In N.Y., Paul Schwartz notes the booing continued until model Christie Brinkley, also involved with the fundraiser, approached the microphone (N.Y. POST, 9/5). NBC’s Bob Costas and Cris Collinsworth, who were reporting on the field at halftime, said, “We want to point out, they’re not booing us at this point, we don’t think.” Costas: “I’m not so sure” (“Redskins-Giants,” NBC, 9/4).

BOO WHO? Tisch appeared on Fox Business prior to kickoff Thursday and said, “Our (ticket and PSL) program was already announced and our fans are already responding very positively to our program. I think it’s going to take a little adjusting, but our fans clearly understand the purpose of the PSLs. The PSLs have a value and once we open the stadium, once they get in there and see what we’ve built for them, there is not going to be a lot of noise about the price and the cost of the PSLs” (“Happy Hour,” Fox Business, 9/4).
