NBA To Allow Advertising On Lower Panels Of Basket Stanchions
Published September 30, 2008
The NBA has "opened up new advertising inventory for its teams that will allow corporate logos on lower panels of their basket stanchions," according to John Lombardo of SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. The league last year "allowed its teams to sell signage on the upper arm stanchions near the baskets," but now, with teams "looking to add value to sponsors, advertising will be sold on the sides of the stanchions from three feet above floor level up to the backboard." One team official said that the new signage is "expected to generate" $100,000-150,000 in revenue. Lombardo notes the new signage will "add clutter to the NBA baskets given that Spalding has a league deal with the lower portion of the side stanchion." Also, State Farm last year "signed exclusive deals in 15 NBA markets to hang its logo on upper arm basket stanchions"
(SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 9/29 issue).
