  • Takeover Could See Philly Arena Change Names

    The financial crisis gripping the global economy over the last several weeks is not sparing the sports world. Citigroup’s deal to takeover Wachovia could bring another name change to the home of the Flyers and 76ers, and while it should not threaten the future of the PGA Tour stop in Charlotte, Citi could take over the title rights to the tournament. FBR confirms it will remain the title sponsor for the Scottsdale PGA Tour event, but the company will “cut back substantially” on its client entertainment. The current economic climate is cited as a reason for cutbacks in NHL coverage from U.S. newspapers. Even David Stern admits the NBA heads into the season with its “fingers crossed a bit because of the economy.” But the situation is not all dire -- the Bills and Sabres are having success selling tickets and sponsorships.
