MLS Fire Name Greeley President After Nearly Five Month Search
Published August 27, 2008
The MLS Fire have named Dave Greeley President, replacing John Guppy, who was fired last fall. Greeley will oversee the team's day-to-day operations and lead management of the club and Toyota Park. Greeley, a longtime sports marketing exec, previously headed up Kemper Sports Marketing & Communications and served as Bears CMO and Senior Dir of Sales & Marketing (Fire). In Chicago, Nick Firchau reports the announcement by Fire Owner Andrew Hauptman "comes after a thorough search that lasted nearly five months." Greeley "hopes his two decades of experience in the sports industry will help propel the franchise's ticket sales, merchandising and overall recognition in the city's crowded sports landscape." Frank Klopas will remain as Fire Technical Dir, while Javier Leon will continue to serve as Andell Sports Group Managing Dir (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 8/27). In Chicago, Luis Arroyave writes what Greeley "lacks in soccer experience he makes up for with 20 years of sports experience." Greeley: "The good news is I'm not going to make soccer decisions." Greeley's "current task will be to try to convert Chicagoans" into Fire fans (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/27).
