The LPGA's decision to institute an English proficiency test for its players is being met with harsh criticism today, and the tour’s headache could possibly get worse. Agents are up in arms over the less-than-substantive explanation for the new policy, with some questioning the legality of such a mandate. One agent says he would consider legal action should his clients be suspended for failing the exam. IMG's Michael Yim says the LPGA "can't do this," adding there "definitely needs to be some sort of discussion with the tour." The LPGA is headquartered in Daytona Beach, and the ACLU is claiming the policy may even violate Florida state law. Meanwhile, the move is taking a bashing by columnists: the N.Y. DAILY NEWS’ Hank Gola writes the LPGA is “headed for another public relations disaster,” while the DETROIT NEWS’ Lynn Henning calls the policy “truly absurd.”
