If You May: PGA Tour Moving Valero Texas Open From Fall Date
Published August 6, 2008
By Jon Show, Staff Writer, SportsBusiness Journal
The PGA Tour has approved the move of Valero Texas Open from the Fall Series to the FedEx Cup regular season, according to industry sources. The tournament, which will play its '08 event October 9-12, will move to May 14-17 starting next year. Valero is signed through 2012, and using other tournaments as a guideline, will increase its spending roughly $4M annually to cover media and sponsorship costs associated with the move. The opening in the schedule became available in June when the PGA Tour dropped the AT&T Classic in Atlanta because it could not find a new title sponsor. Plans for the San Antonio-based event's former Fall Series date could not be determined, but PGA Tour execs have said they are looking at adding a new event. A formal announcement of the '09 schedule is expected later this month or early September.
