The approaching Beijing Games are initiating a sports boom in China, and IMG Worldwide and China state broadcaster CCTV today jointly announce an attempt to capitalize on the trend with an exclusive 20-year deal to develop and market sports events and programming across the country. The effort aims to expand the commercialization of sports in China, an area the country traditionally has been lacking. However, IMG will surely augment that dearth with its vast experience in creating and supporting events and programming. The venture marks a seismic shift in China's sports marketing landscape, as CCTV, which traditionally has drawn most sports programming from outside the country, for the first time will partner with a company based outside of China to produce domestic events.
