USTA Dropping Gimelstob From Ads After Derogatory Comments
Published July 10, 2008
The USTA has dropped new BOD member Justin Gimelstob from its ad campaign for the '08 Olympus U.S. Open Series after his recent insensitive remarks about female tennis players, according to Lisa Dillman of the L.A. TIMES. The USTA in a statement said, "Gimelstob's recent comments ... were derogatory and demeaning to female tennis players and to women in general." Gimelstob on a DC radio show last month used a "derogatory term in describing" former tennis player Anna Kournikova and made "suggestive comments" about WTA Sony Ericsson Tour player Nicole Vaidisova (L.A. TIMES, 7/10). After his remarks, Gimelstob was suspended for one match without pay by World TeamTennis, but "stayed on air during Wimbledon for his job with the Tennis Channel" (AP, 7/9).
