    Strange Brew

The NHL’s free agency starts today, but the most interesting news comes out of Columbus, where the Blue Jackets are reportedly one of several clubs taking a 25% cut in the revenues they receive from the NHL because they failed to meet market incentives in the CBA. This marks the first year the league is penalizing underperforming clubs and is a blow to team revenue, as an NHL source estimates the Blue Jackets are missing out on roughly $2.25M. On the other hand, the Predators will reportedly receive a league-high $12M in assistance. Meanwhile, in other NHL news, details begin to emerge on the escalating legal dispute between the league and MSG and the EDMONTON JOURNAL goes behind the scenes of Daryl Katz’s purchase of the Oilers and offers a breakdown of the payment he made to each board member. Finally, Nielsen Sports lists the top 20 NHL national TV advertisers for the season. Dodge is tapped as the top spender, pouring $3.1M into the league from October-April, which accounted for 2.87% of the company's entire ad budget during the period.
