U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships To Remain At River Oaks
Published May 29, 2008
The USTA and River Oaks Country Club Tennis Dir Van Barry yesterday said that the ATP Tour U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships will remain at the venue through at least 2012, according to Dale Robertson of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. USTA Managing Dir of Tournament Operations Jim Curley said that River Oaks, which in April hosted the event for the first time, held "'a first-class event' and deserved to keep the tournament for another four years." Robertson notes the '09 event will take place April 6-12, directly following the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami and playing "opposite only an ATP stop in Casablanca, Morocco." River Oaks' tennis facility currently is "undergoing a major renovation, which includes the construction of an on-site parking garage, new locker rooms and a fitness club, in addition to completely rebuilt outside courts, which had to be relocated to make room for the garage." The USTA Southern Section reportedly "made a significant pitch to lure the 2009 tournament to Atlanta" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 5/29).
