NBA: NBA Canada promoted Dir of Marketing DAN MACKENZIE to GM, where he will be responsible for growing the NBA’s Canadian TV business in conjunction with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. MacKenzie will report to Senior VP/Team Marketing & Business Operations SCOTT O’NEIL. In addition, NBA Canada named GEORGE DUDAS Manager of Business Development, LEAH BROWN Manager of Licensing & Merchandising and JONATHAN CHANG Manager of Marketing Partnerships (NBA).
MEDIA: Turner Sports named MATTHEW HONG VP/GM of Sports Digital for the company’s new media division, effective May 19. Hong will be responsible for the overall management and supervision of business operations for Turner Sports’ new media portfolio, which includes NASCAR.com, PGATour.com and PGA.com, as well as broadband channels “TNT OverTime” on NBA.com and “TBS Hot Corner” on MLB.com (Turner)....ESPN named BRETT HURWITZ VP/Ad Sales Operations (ESPN).
FRANCHISE: The upstart Philadelphia MLS team has hired ROB SMITH as Dir of Operations and DAVE DEBUSSCHERE as CFO, the team's first two front-office execs (THE DAILY, 5/13)....Former MLBer DAN PETRY was named Dir of Suite Sales for the Lions and Ford Field. For the last 16 years, Petry has been in the paper industry, most recently as Automotive Specification Sales Rep at Int’l Paper Co. (Lions).

POLITICS' DIRTY SIDE: HBO's "Real Sports" last night examined former NBAer KEVIN JOHNSON's candidacy in the Sacramento mayoral race. After announcing his intentions to run for the office, several allegations of sexual misconduct involving Johnson came to light. But when asked whether Johnson is a favorite to win, HBO's James Brown said, “He still looks pretty good. He’s got the backing of a number of major organizations there” ("Real Sports," HBO, 5/12).
