Let The Good Times Roll: UGA Spends $2.2M During Sugar Bowl Trip
Published May 7, 2008
The Univ. of Georgia (UGA) spent about $2.2M during their week-long trip to New Orleans to play the Allstate Sugar Bowl in January, $323,753.30 "more than it was allocated," according to Chip Towers of the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION. UGA spent $164,687 to take 123 players to New Orleans for the game against the Univ. of Hawaii, with the money paying for “mileage, meal money, per diems and incidentals.” The school's total traveling party numbered 745 people, including 89 from UGA President Michael Adams' party and the 400-member Redcoat Band. There also were “at least two official parties hosted" by Adams. Another $9,000 was spent on a "food-and-beverage stocked hospitality suite at the Riverside Hilton, and $17,400 went for 116 tickets at $150 each to the Sugar Bowl Gala.” However, UGA will get the spending surplus back "and more when the [SEC] hands out its annual revenue distribution checks later this month” -- the school is “expected to receive at least $10[M]” (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 5/7). See an itemized list of some of the associated costs incurred by UGA at the '08 Sugar Bowl.
