Ovechkin On The Verge Of First Major Sponsorship Deals
Published May 1, 2008
Capitals LW Alex Ovechkin's marketing reps are "close to announcing Ovechkin's first major sponsorship contracts," according to Rick Westhead of the TORONTO STAR. Ovechkin's marketing agent Konstantin Selinevich said that deals are "in the works" with Ferrari and Verizon. Selinevich added that talks continue with other companies, including Coca-Cola. Westhead notes Ovechkin last month retained WMG to aid in his marketing efforts. While Ovechkin already has deals with Reebok's CCM brand, Upper Deck and Hype energy drink, none have "put much marketing muscle behind him," though Selinevich said that this "will change this summer when Reebok rolls out an Ovechkin clothing line." Selinevich: "It's been hard; in the past there have been some language-skills issues. Now, he's had such an unbelievable season that there is more interest, but we don't want him to be a walking billboard. You'll see some major deals this summer." Toronto-based sports marketer Bob Stellick: "I think there's a market for Alex. ... The challenge with most athletes is that their agents want three- or four-year commitments. That isn't happening" (TORONTO STAR, 5/1).
