The '05 season-opening telecast on YES pulled an 11.6 HH rating with 1.2 million viewers (YES). TSN drew 437,000 viewers for the game, marking the net's largest audience for a Blue Jays opener in 11 years (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 4/4)….Monday's Nationals-Phillies home opener in Philadelphia attracted a record TV audience on KYW-CBS with a 9.1/19 HH rating, representing 269,000 HHs (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 4/2).

HOT ICE: Tuesday night's Hurricanes-Capitals game earned a 1.6 HH Nielsen rating on CSN Mid-Atlantic, the highest-rated Capitals game of the season and highest-rated game since the NHL lockout. The game rated higher in the DC market than alternate programming on ESPN, ESPN2, Versus and MASN. The game also received a 1.9 HH rating in the male 18-49 demo (Comcast). CSN Mid-Atlantic's ratings for Capitals games also are up 50% year-over-year, while ratings for Capitals games on Versus this season are up 150% in the DC market, with national viewership for those games up 100% (CABLEFAX DAILY, 4/4)….Wednesday night's Bruins-Devils game on NESN earned a 3.1 HH rating, better than the Celtics game on CSN New England and ESPN combined (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/4).

OLD COLLEGE TRY: Fox stayed on top in primetime last week, but CBS ranked second thanks to its coverage of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. While Fox prevailed in the adults 18-49 demo for the 12th straight week with a 3.7/10 rating, CBS finished second with a 3.1/9, followed by ABC (2.6/7), NBC (2.3/6) and Univision (1.6/4). CBS' primetime basketball coverage last Thursday drew a 3.9/10 in the adults 18-49 demo, with Friday night earning a 3.2/11, and Saturday earning a 3.7/12, which were all on par with the same week last year. CBS won primetime on Friday and Saturday in the demo, but finished second on Thursday (VARIETY.com, 4/2).

NEED FOR SPEED: Speed's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pre-race show "NASCAR RaceDay Built by the Home Depot" is off to the best start in the show's three-year history, up 12% in coverage area ratings from a year ago.
