SBD/Issue 131/MLB Season Preview
Popular MLBers To Appear In Macy's Father's Day Promo
Published March 31, 2008
Macy's, which "generally eschews sports marketing," has gathered a collection of 15 MLB players and managers and is pairing it with baseball team deals for a Father’s Day promo to "push summer sportswear," according to Terry Lefton in this week's SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. MLBers in the promotion include Mets manager Willie Randolph, Dodgers manager Joe Torre, Yankees P Mariano Rivera, Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols, Tigers CF Curtis Granderson, Red Sox LF Manny Ramirez, Giants CF Dave Roberts, Mariners LF Raul Ibanez, Dodgers 2B Jeff Kent, Reds 2B Brandon Phillips, Marlins 2B Dan Uggla, Cubs LF Alfonso Soriano, Braves P Tom Glavine, D'Backs P Dan Haren and Astros P Roy Oswalt. The group will "appear on the cover of a multimillion circulation" Father's Day Gift Guide to be distributed over the next few months. Many players will "appear in local print ads" and some will make appearances at Macy's stores. National ads also are expected in GQ and Esquire. In support of the promotion, Macy's also has signed sponsorship deals with the Astros, Braves, Cardinals and Reds, among others, and will hold "Macy's nights at those ballparks, where it will distribute gate premiums and coupon books" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 3/31 issue).
