NCAA Won't Have Decals On Floors For Regionals, Final Four
Published March 27, 2008
The floors in the Alamodome and the four regional sites for the NCAA men's basketball tournament "weren't scheduled to get [NCAA logo] decals," according to Ken Tysiac of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. Univ. of North Carolina (UNC) F Tyler Hansbrough and G Marcus Ginyard both "slipped on the circular NCAA decal" during Sunday's second-round win against the Univ. of Arkansas at the RBC Center. UNC Associate AD for Communications Steve Kirschner said of the decals not being used for upcoming rounds, "We're glad, because we think it's certainly safer for the players." Tysiac noted that courts at other first-round sites also had decals. The future of the decals "will be part of the NCAA's customary extensive review after the tournament" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 3/25). UNC coach Roy Williams last night appeared on ESPN's "PTI," where he talked about petitioning the NCAA to remove the logos. He said the logos were "very slick. Guys were falling on them and I just feel like you’ve got to take care of the student-athletes, and I’m so old, it doesn’t make any difference if I make somebody mad if the cause was strong enough. I really believe it was silly to have those logos. Now with what you can superimpose on the screen anyway, you can put the NCAA up in front of Roy Williams’ face if you want to, but it doesn’t affect the play” (ESPN, 3/26).
