Blog Hound: March Madness 2008
Published March 20, 2008
With the men's NCAA Tournament kicking off today, bloggers discuss the hype surrounding March Madness 2008.
Orlando Sentinel Open Mike Posted by: KilroyFSU
“The BCS football championship is contrived and subjective, the NBA playoffs are predictable, almost pre-determined (although the Western Conference matchups will be interesting). The only constant over time is the NCAA tournament. It's the most exciting two weeks in all of sports.”

Male Coworker: “March Madness? Is this a sickness?” Me: (well, sort of) “No. It refers to the NCAA basketball tournament.” Male Coworker: blank stare Me: “College basketball. 64 teams. Compete in March.” Male Coworker: “I have never heard of this. We don’t have your college sports and I do not play basketball. I play football [soccer] and field hockey.”

“For the first time in 5 years, I don’t have an office pool to join for the NCAA Tournament. I’m a serious sports fan, and, next to the World Cup, the NCAA Tournament is the greatest sporting event in the world. So, what am I to do?”
Work Hangover Posted by: Lee
“Honestly, for me, the tournament selection show is the most entertaining sports related show on television that doesn't actually involve anyone playing any sport.”
Bleacher Report Posted by: Tim Cary
“March Madness is a sports fan's dream. And the first two days are my favorite sports days of the year.”

- The vast majority of discussion is about the science of filling out a bracket. Fans were more than willing to share their strategies, superstitions, and upset picks.
- Fans are waiting in anticipation for the first weekend of the tournament because of the sheer unpredictability about which teams will win. They believe the first two days of the tournament truly represent the “madness” aspect of the tournament.
- A small group of bloggers have focused their attention on the poor formatting of the event. They think the NCAA should do away with the “play-in game” and reevaluate how they rank teams.
