Yahoo Removes Shanahan Spying Mentions In Response To Letter
Published March 5, 2008
Yahoo Sports editors have "removed any mention from both their Web site and archives that said Broncos coach Mike Shanahan had hired someone to videotape" Chargers practices, according to Jeff Legwold of the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS. The paragraph had been "part of a larger story" posted September 13, but it "circulated in local media outlets in recent weeks." Yahoo said in a statement: "We have eliminated a paragraph in Jason Cole's September 13, 2007 story that, upon review, does not meet the editorial standards of Yahoo Sports. We took immediate action to eliminate the content from our site as soon as we became aware of this matter." Shanahan, via attorney Harvey Steinberg, had sent a letter last week "demanding an 'immediate' retraction and apology" from Yahoo (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 3/5). Steinberg: "We're pleased Yahoo acknowledged that coach Shanahan did not engage in any improper conduct. We think this is a first step in trying to eliminate their wrongdoing." In Denver, Mike Klis notes the original Yahoo story was re-posted by ProFootballTalk.com on February 23 (DENVER POST, 3/5).
