49ers To Return Candlestick Park Name To Stadium In June
Published March 3, 2008
The 49ers said that Monster Park will again be known as Candlestick Park when the team’s naming-rights deal with Monster expires in June, according to Mike Swift of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. The Monster deal “brought the team only $700,000 a year -- a relatively insignificant number for an NFL franchise.” Selling the naming rights to a new stadium in Santa Clara or S.F. is “expected to net the 49ers at least $100[M], and is a keystone to the financing of the new building.” 49ers VP/Communications Lisa Lang said that the team has not “begun talks with corporations who might be interested in buying the name to the new stadium.” However, she said that “down the road, ‘that’s where we want to put our efforts and our energies’” (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 3/1). City workers “will take down the Monster Park signs and replace them with Candlestick Park signs, though it is unclear who will pay for them” (S.F. CHRONICLE, 3/1).
