Orioles Dish Out $7.7M In '07 Draft Signing Bonuses
Published February 27, 2008
The Orioles awarded $7.7M in signing bonuses to their draft picks in '07, which included a draft record $6M bonus for top pick C Matt Wieters. The Astros, who spent only $500,000 on draft pick bonuses after the team refused to go over the MLB recommended slot for a single player, ended up being the first team since the '80 Yankees to fail to sign a player before the fifth round. After having ten of the first 175 picks in the draft, the Blue Jays spent $6.3M on bonuses, up 152% from their expenditures last year. The following presents MLB team-by-team signing bonus expenditures for '07, as well as from recent years (Baseball America Prospect Handbook).
