Angel Stadium Workers Storm Aramark Office Over Conditions
Published February 21, 2008
Angel Stadium union workers and their supporters yesterday stormed an Aramark office in Irvine, California, "demanding to speak to management from the Angel Stadium food contractor about what they say are bad working conditions," according to Adam Townsend of the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER. The workers are "in the midst of an 11-month contract standoff" with Aramark. While union President Ada Briceno has "stopped short of threatening a strike" at the stadium, she has "promised continuing demonstrations." Briceno: "It depends on how much they push us. We don't want to provoke anything, but we're ready to respond." Union member Lois Meaders: "It's about conditions. It gets to 120 degrees in our stand. The vents don't work ... our stand is filled with smoke and we still have to work in these conditions. ... They don't care about the workers, they just care about the almighty dollar." The stadium workers have been "without a contract since March 2007," and both sides have been "negotiating with a federal mediator." Aramark officials would not comment on workers' claims (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 2/20).
